St Barbara, Christian virgin martyr, 19th century. A Christian martyr who died c235, St Barbara was shut up in a tower to protect her from suitors. She is said to have put a third set of windows into the tower to represent the trinity. Her symbol of a tower can be seen at top right. St Barbara is the Patron saint of arsenals and artillery and a protector against lightning.
