Cyclopedia of applied electricity : a general reference work on direct-current generators and motors, storage batteries, electrochemistry, welding, electric wiring, meters, electric lighting, electric railways, power stations, switchboards, power transmission, alternating-current machinery, telegraphy, etc. . ond^ ^all and thc boud UpOU a plastic, putty-like alloy ofmercury and some other metal, is applied in a number of differentways. One form consists of a strip of copper held by a spring againstthe rail ends under the fish-plate. The rail ends at the point of con-tact with this strip of copper are amalgamated and made bright bythe use of a mercury compound similar to the plastic alloy. Thesepoints of contact are then daubed with plastic alloy, and the copperbond plate applied. It is not necessary, with any form of plasticbond, that the mechanical contact be unyielding, as the amalgamatedsurfaces with the aid of the plastic alloy between them maintain agood conductivity in spite of any slight motion. The plastic alloycan be applied In a number of other ways, one of which is to drill ahole forming a small cup In the rail base In adjacent rail ends, fillthese cups with plastic alloy, and bridge the space between themwith a short copper bond having its ends projecting down into thecups. 314.
