View SW of the square inner ward of Flint Castle, Wales, UK, with a round tower at each corner (NE corner tower centre front). Begun on Sunday 25 July 1277 & almost complete by 1284, Flint was the first of the castles & fortified English towns founded by Edward I during his conquest of North Wales. The castle stands on the foreshore of the Dee estuary, controlling movement along the river & coastal plain. The Great Tower or Donjon at the SE (L) is separated from the inner & outer wards by a moat crossed by a drawbridge to the inner ward. The entire castle was once surrounded by water fed by the estuary giving access to shipping. King Richard II was captured in 1399 after leaving Conwy Castle & taken to Flint to await his rival Henry Bolingbroke, the future Henry IV. Shakespeare features their meeting at Flint Castle in Act III of King Richard II.
