Jellingstenene (Jelling Stones), village of Jelling, to north west of Vejle, Jylland (Jutland), Denmark

Jellingstenene, dating from circa 985, were commissioned by "King Harald Blåtand" (Bluetooth) and in Runic script proclaim his conversion to Christianity and commemorate his parents "King Gorm the Old" and "Queen Thyra Danebod", who are buried in the adjacent burial mounds. The present 11th century church, sited between the two mounds and adjacent to the stones, lies on the remains of two older wooden churches, the second of which may have been built by "Harald Blåtand" and be Denmark's first officially protected Christian church.
