Artwork of the anatomy of the rib cage. There are 10 'true' ribs gaining attachment posteriorly and anteriorly. The 2 'false' ribs are said to be 'floating' as they have no anterior attachment. All ribs are connected to each other by intercostal muscles which in addition to other muscles of the thorax, assist with breathing via rib movements. In the upper midline is the squarish manubrium bone connected below to the sternum, which terminates as a pointed xiphoid process.
