London is spoken of as the most cosmopolitancity of the world, but surely Jerusalem—especially at Easter-time—is far more so. Inone street alone I found myself jostled againstpeople from all parts. There were pilgrims andtourists from every country in Europe, andones interest centred in the crowds of Russianpeasants—the fur-capped men, the women withgaily coloured kerchiefs round their heads, allin thick winter dresses. Americans of all sortsare in the throng, and I noticed the womenalmost unvaryingly wore long becoming veilshanging at the back of their hats.
