Preparation of the Patient.—Clothing.—Inoffice practice, tell the patient to remove her hatand coat, loosen all bands about the waist, and totake off her corset. Closed drawers must be takenoff. If the patient is in bed, provide a pair of drawersand stockings for her to wear in addition to hergown. Bladder.—Direct the patient to empty herbladder immediately before the examination. Cleansing and Disinfection.—Wash off thevulva and perineum with warm water and soap,and give a cleansing vaginal douche of salt orboric-acid solution before the examination. If an extensive examination is planned, includingpassing the uterine or bladder sound, disinfectthe vulva with bichlorid solution i : 10,000 afterthe soap-and-water cleansing, and give a bichloridvaginal douche. THE GYNECOLOGIC EXAMINATION 25 In some cases the physician may prefer toexamine the patient without preliminary cleansingor disinfection, in order to determine the presenceand character of certain discharges.
