A gigantic goose as public art in Trento, Italy: “the largest goose in the world” or “l’oca più grande del mondo”, symbol of the city’s annual Feste Vigiliane celebrations until it was dismantled in 2014.
Trento, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy: “the largest goose in the world” (“l’oca più grande del mondo”) in Piazza Dante, a public park near the railway station. The giant goose measured 12 metres high and metres long and an application to enter it in the Guinness Book of Records was made in 2008. The bird was removed from public display in 2014 when it was old and battered. Consisting of an iron ‘skeleton’ covered in bamboo canes, the bird weighed more than 70 quintals. One quintal (Italian quintale) equals 100kg (or 220 pounds). So, a weight of 70 quintals equals 7,000kg or 115,400 pounds. Confusingly, the quintal is frequently equated with the British English hundredweight (8 stone or 112 pounds) or the American English hundredweight (100 pounds). The supersize artwork was created by the Amici Trentini Group from Bleggio, based on a project by a surveyor from Trento, Enrico Weber, and under the direction of the artist Liberio Furlini. It soon became a symbol of the city’s Feste Vigiliane, a set of celebrations that take place every year in Trento in the second half of June and end on the 26th in honour of the city's patron saint San Vigilio.
