Wheat leaf infected with rust fungus. Light micrograph of a section through a wheat (Triticum sp.) leaf infected with the parasitic Puccinia graminis rust fungus. Two uredia (lower centre and lower right), containing stalked unicellular urediniospores (spores), can be seen bursting through the epidermis (surface) of the leaf. The base of the uredinium contains hyphae (tubes), which pierce the cells and suck out nutrients. Magnification: x37 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
