Maned Lioness (Panthera Leo)
This is a very unusual lioness She has a mane and is infertile We have enjoyed seeing her many times over a period of nine years on safarii in Botswana in the Okavango Delta Because she looks like a male she has been chased many times by other male lions trying to push her out of their territory However she has survived by forming her own unusual pride together with her sister and her cubs These cubs stayed with this pride much longer than usual possibly because the leader of their pride is female We last saw this lioness in 2002 and as far as we know she has not been seen since
