A controller box which, together with a mastercontroller, control switch, grid resistor, main fuse andthe necessary interconnecting cables, constitute a com-plete equipment for this type of car, and which is knownas the HLD control, has recently been placed on themarket by the Westinghouse Electric & ManufacturingCompany, East Pittsburgh, Pa. The controller box, shown in the accompanying illus-trations, is divided into compartments, one containingthree switches or circuit breakers, one containing thereverser and commutating switch and two small endcompartments housing the motor cutout switches, re-lays and control terminals. While the maximum depth. CONTROLLER BOX INCLOSED AND READY FOR MOUNTING is over 17 in., this occurs only above the switch com-partment, the top of which is only 14 in. square andextends between the sills, so that the effective depthbeneath the car sills is only 14% in. The principal changes in main motor circuit connec-tions, as well as the application and shutting off ofpower and the overload tripping features, are accom-plished by three independent electric-pneumatic switches are of the HL type, which are providedwith magnetic blowout. The minor changes in motorcircuit connections, as required to accelerate the car,are accomplished by means of a drum type PK direction of motion of the car is controlled by apneumatically operated reverser. The operation of the car or train is governed by amaster controller which controls the operation of themagnet valves and thus directs the movement of theswitches, drum, and reverser, and regulates the opera-tion of the mot
