Use of a laser to treat an abnormality of a young woman's cervix. The surgeon is using a colposcope, a device fitted with a binocular microscope, to examine her vagina & cervix & to accurately direct the laser beam to remove (ablate) abnormal tissue. Abnormalities of the cells comprising the cervical epithelium (dysplasia) are classified according to their severity & depth of penetration & are regarded as precursors to cancerous changes. Use of a laser is indicated when a biopsy (tissue sample), removed following an abnormal cervical smear test, confirms a need for conservative treatment.
