Total ankle replacement surgery. Close-up of surgical tools being used to carry out a total ankle replacement operation. The implant has been added here. This operation is also known as a total ankle arthroplasty (TAA), and is used as an alternative to fusing the ankle joint. The affected parts of the joint are removed and replaced with implants. The operation is usually carried out in severe cases of arthritis of the ankle joint.
