An old engraving of the ‘Champion’ harvester or reaper. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The illustration shows the implement being used as a mower (top), a dropper (centre) and a self-baler (bottom). A reaper is a farm implement or person that reaps (cuts and often gathers) crops (usually cereals) at harvest time. Most modern mechanical reapers cut the grass; most also gather it. Mechanical reapers substantially changed agriculture from their appearance in the 1830s until later that century, when they evolved into ‘combined’ machines.

A reaper is a farm implement or person that reaps (cuts and often gathers) crops (usually cereals) at harvest time. Most modern mechanical reapers cut the grass; most also gather it, either by windrowing it or picking it up. Mechanical reapers substantially changed agriculture from their appearance in the 1830s until later that century, when they evolved into ‘combined’ machines. The Champion harvester was produced by the Champion Interest group (Champion Machine Company, later Warder, Bushnell & Glessner) in Springfield, Ohio in the second half of the 19th century. The company was highly successful and Springfield is still known as ‘The Champion City’. Today reapers and grain binders have been largely replaced by combines in commercial farming, but some smaller farms still use them.
