(From Emerys Chemical Bacteriology, influence should be suspected. A form known as the micrococcus tetragenusoccurs both as a pathogenic and a harmless organism. It consists, as its nameimplies, of four cocci arranged in a square within a mucous capsule. It stainswith the ordinary dyes and is Gram-positive. This organism is found, in its THE SPUTUM. 17 pathogenic state, in bronchitis, tubercular cavities, and hemorrhagic harmless form differs from the pathogenic type in the fact that it cannotbe cultivated. The sarcinae are rarely found in the sputum. These organisms aresomewhat smaller than those occurring in the stomach and are probably purelysaprophytic in the sputum.
