An early portrait of Bombardier Billy Wells, British boxer (and later boxing book writer). === William Thomas Wells (1889 – 1967) was an English heavyweight boxer, British and British Empire Champion and first Heavyweight to win the Lonsdale Belt. During WWI Wells joined the Welch Regiment and was later promoted to sergeant. It is little known that Wells was the third "gong man", the muscled figure seen striking the gong in the introduction to J. Arthur Rank films. He died at his Ealing home on 11 June 1967, aged 77
