The accompany- ing photographs of the bird were taken in such a place on the 17th July. This nest for some reason contained only three eggs. I made a first attempt to photograph the bird on the 16th, but it was very shy, and did not give me a chance. This was disappointmg, for I was to make a three days' trip into the tundra on the 18th, and knew that the eggs would hatch during my absence. The 17th was a brilliant day, and, resolving to leave nothing to chance, I went out early to find an assistant.
