Environmental protest slogan. “Frack Free Zone”. A Greenpeace anti-fracking campaign poster attached to a drainpipe. Dorchester, Dorset, England, UK.

Fracturing or Fracking is a technique used in the oil industry to increase the productivity of oil and gas fields, it was first used commercially in 1949. Fluids are injected under pressure into the wells causing cracks and fractures to open up deep under the ground allowing the oil and gas to flow more freely through the rock. This improves the release of oil or natural gas from the well and enables more of it to be extracted. In recent years Fracking has become a controversial topic due to environmental concerns and this image shows a Greenpeace Anti- Fracking poster displayed in Dorchester, Dorset. Wyche Farm, near Poole Harbour in Dorset is the site of the largest onshore oil field in Western Europe. It has been producing oil and gas since the late 1970’s, and Fracking has been used there in the has also been used offshore in The North Sea oil fields since the mid 1960’s when they were first discovered.
