Margaret Corbin, American Patriot

Tablet to Margaret Corbin (1751-1800) on the monument to the heroine of the American Revolution on the grounds at West Point Academy, NY. Margaret and her husband John Corbin defended Fort Washington in Manhattan against Hessian troops. The couple took charge of a cannon when the gunner was killed. After John was killed, Margaret continued to fire the canon herself until she was wounded. She was the first woman to receive a pension as a disabled soldier from the United States government.
