The elegant facade of the Pavilion which was once the main entrance and booking hall into the Royal Pier, Southampton

Southampton Royal Pier was opened by Princess Victoria in 1833. The pier pavilion was extended in 1922 and the present gatehouse, described at the time as "wedding cake architecture" was opened in 1930. Designed by Edward Cooper Poole the new building was very ornate with the noticeable feature of six cast-iron heraldic lions that survived from the earlier gatehouse. A serious fire in 1987 and a subsequent one in 1992 effectively sealed the fate of Southampton Royal Pier. The old deserted gatehouse and entry hall building has been renovated by local businessman Kuti Miah who owns several Indian restaurants in the area. He has now opened the Kuti's Thai Restaurant which offers great views across to the docks and surrounding waterway so this might pave the way for further investment in the rest of the derelict Pier that still stands defiantly in the water.
