Space rocket lifting-off. This is the Indian Space Research Organisation's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) C2. It was 44 metres tall, and had a lift-off weight of 295 tonnes. This rocket used both solid and liquid fuel for propulsion. It launched three satellites into Earth orbit on 26 May 1999. The main payload was IRS-P4 (OCEANSAT), an Indian satellite that monitors phytoplankton blooms in the world's oceans. The other two satellites were the Korean KITSAT-3 and German DLR-TUBSAT. PSLV-C2 launched from Sriharikota, an island on the coast of the Bay of Bengal, north of Chennai.
