From a very large number of observations in all parts ofthe country 1 find that in the majority of stations the average load isvery close to two-thirds of the maximum load. Now it is also a wellknown fact that the maximum economy of the steam engine existsfor a very small range of load, and that on each side of the point ofmaximum economy the efficiency falls off; rapidly on the overload,somewhat less rapidly on the underload. In most stations the engines at the best have an average load ofonly two-thirds their most efificient load, and as a consequence con-sume over lbs. of coal per kilowatt-hour. With badly regulated engines, and especially with water powerplants, the changes in load are accompanied by variations in speedand consequently in voltage. These troubles may be entirely cor-rected by Installing a battery. The battery in this case becomes distinclly a load regulator. Kigs,8 and 9 show results obtained at Woonsocket, which is a water powerplant. In Kig. 8 the load is carried entirely by the generators, andas is to be expected, the potential curve is very irregular, varyingalmost 100 volts, while the current variiS from o to 250 action of the battery is shown in Kig. 9, where the generator load\a
