Francois Roudaire( 1836-1885). 1867 illustration of the French military officer and geographer Francois Elie Roudaire. Roudaire is best known for proposing the creation of an inland Sahara Sea in Africa by flooding areas of the Sahara Desert that were below sea level. He proposed creating the sea by cutting a channel from the Chott el Fejej to the Gulf of Gabes and suggested that the mass of water would allow water transport, as well as significantly alter the climate, turning the arid region of the Sahara into one of considerably greater fertility.
