A system of surgery . ls of some septic alkaloid(ptomaine), derived from decomposing tissues or from a parasiticmicro-organism which has gained access to the wounded part This GQ6 INJURIES AND DISEASES OF LYMPHATICS. excites an -inflammation of the vessel, and particularly of its outercoats, which, spreading to the surrounding tissue, causes a peri-lymphangitis ; the affected vessel can then be perceived superficiallyas a thickened cord beneath the skin. The contents of the vesselsare increased by the cells from the intima, by white blood corpuscles, and later by pus. The inflammation may subside and the lymphaticsregain their natural condition, but localised abscesses may form, and, bursting on the surface, will lead to a complete obliteration of thevessels in which they arise. When this happens in the deeper chainof lymphatics, a very severe and extensive cellulitis may ensue. Symptoms.—The affection is first notified by pain and throb-bing, with great tenderness at the site of origin, around which there. ;. 1S8.—Lupus Lymphaticus.(From a drawing in HospitalMuseum.) appears a red areola. Radiating fromthis spot, the skin of the arm or leg be-comes marked with red striae, which some-times coalesce to form an erysipelatousarea. Although marking the course ofthe lymphatic vessels, these stripe aremuch broader than the vessel itself, andare lost as they approach the next setof glands, disappearing at the elbow orpopliteal space, and never extending be-yond the axilla or groin. At the sametime pyrexia supervenes, and may beextreme, with rigors of more or less frequency. The principal painis seated in the region of the glands, but there is great tendernessalong the line of the vessels, which are evident as hard cordsbeneath the skin. The inflammation is more often acute thanchronic, and in the former case may last only a few days, andterminate in resolution, the parts returning to a normal state. Butif, as is usual, pyogenic organisms have formed part
