In case of mis-hap the economizer may be cut out, the flue gases being con-veyed to the chimney by means of a by-pass or auxiliary flueand the feed-water being pumped direct into the boilers without typhoons of noted severity, exceptional care had to be takenwith both the foundations and the building of the shaft.
