Illustrious Birth Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's Jour- nal reveals the following entry for May 5, 1857: "Dined in town at Parker's with Emerson, Lowell, Motley, Holmes, Cabot, Underwood and the Publisher, Phillips, to talk about the new magazine the latter wishes to establish. It will no doubt be done, though I am not so eager about it as the ; Despite Longfellow's indifference, the new magazine was started, with James Russell Lowell as editor. Evidently the founders of the magazine were correct in their premise that the country needed just such a publication, for it still lives. Its name is the Atlantic Monthly. Many a dinner did these gentlemen attend at the Parker House, both in their capacity as contributors to the Atlantic, and as members of the famed Saturday Club.
