Engraving depicting the meeting between John Byron and Patagonian tribespeople in 1741. Byrons ship, HMS Wager, had been shipwrecked on the coast of Patagonia (now Argentina). One group of survivors rowed toward Rio de Janiero, the other (under Byron) sailed north with the hope of encountering Spanish ships. This plate was published in An account of the voyages undertaken by the order of His present Majesty : for making discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere, by John Hawkesworth, printed at London in 1773.
