It was determined, after crossing theupper ford, to get into the rear of the forces guarding the bridgeand the lower ford. After occupying the Warrenton road, west ofthe bridge, it was a part of the plan to destroy the railroad at ornear Gainesville. Thus the communication between the enemysforces at Manassas and those in the valley of Virginia, before Wiil-chester, which had been held in check by Major-General Patterson,was to be cut off. General Tyler was directed to move, with three of his brigades,on the Warrenton road, and open on the enemys batteries; Hunter,to move after himj and to get behind the enemy.
