EDUCATION RESUMED IN ITALY - In many parts of Italy occupied by Allied forces, children have, after three years, been afforded the opportunity of resuming their schooling. Italy's entry into the war over three years ago preciptated the complete breakdown of the Italian educational organisation. Now under a system which is devoid of Fascist influence, the Italian child's school life is a far happier lot. This set of pictures in the town of Apricena illustrates what is happening now in many Italian towns and villages - a school reopening. The set opens with children passing discarded or unused school desks on their way into school. In schoolrooms all Fascist emblems are removed. Mussolini's portrait is removed, and the Queen's portrait replaces it. In the Fascist regime the children wore an almost military uniform. This has been discarded. One picture here shows a small boy still in the original garb being taught the "V" sign by a little girl. The Director of Education, Nicola Pitta is seen once again among the children he loves so much. Photographic negative , British Army
