Ethiopia, Lalibela, January 2024: celebrations of Timket, Ethiopia's most important religious festival. The Orthodox epiphany, Timkat, is celebrated in the various major sites of Ethiopian Christianity, and especially in Lalibela. These festivities last three days and three nights, and commemorate both the baptism of Christ by John the Baptist and the miracle of the wedding at Cana. Priests and deacons in shimmering vestments join the faithful in colorful processions of prayer, song and dance. Lalibela is famous for its site of rock churches, monolithic churches carved out of the rock, a mecca of Ethiopian Christianity and a place of pilgrimage and devotion.
