Altafjord near Tromso Norway where the German battleship Tirpitz was sunk on 12th November 1944


Norway. Alta fjord near Trondheim where the German battleship Tirpitz, sister ship to the Bismarck, was destroyed and sunk by tallboy bombs of the British Lancaster bombers on the 12th November 1944. The ship damaged by a bomb on 15th September 1944 was no longer seaworthy and was anchored off Haakoy Island when she was sunk. The wreck was broken up between 1948-1957 in a joint Norwegian/German salvage operation.
