US Weather Bureau kite. Modified US Weather Bureau version of a box kite of a type originally developed by Australian inventor and engineer Lawrence Hargrave (1850-1915). Hargrave developed his box kite in 1893, with the kites providing sufficient lift to carry heavy objects including humans. The changes for use as a weather kite were by US meteorologists Charles F. Marvin, Henry Helm Clayton, and Sterling P. Fergusson. The kite carried measuring and forecasting instruments aloft into the atmosphere. Founded in 1870, the US Weather Bureau was renamed in 1970 as the National Weather Service. Photographed in 1917, at Fort Monroe, Virginia, USA.
