INTEGRAL satellite launch. Artwork of the International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL) satellite being launched into Earth orbit on 17 October 2002 by a Proton-DM2 rocket. This is the DM2 upper stage (marked in Cyrillic), with the faring being jettisoned. INTEGRAL was developed by the European Space Agency, working with NASA and the Russian space agency. It follows a highly eccentric orbit (reaching distances of 153,000 kilometres), mostly outside the Earth's radiation belts, enabling it to observe gamma ray sources (such as gamma-ray bursts) with its array of four instruments.
