Clubroot infection. Light micrograph a section through a cabbage root infected with clubroot (Plasmodiophora brassicae). Plasmodiophora is a parasitic protist that infects the roots of cabbages and attacks other crucifers, causing wilting, stunted growth and leaf death. Here, plasmodia (fertilised multinucleated cells, purple patches) can be seen infecting the root cells. These will divide to form new spores that are released when the host cell bursts. Magnification: x13 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
