Portrait of Robert Koch (1843-1910), German bacteriologist and Nobel laureate. Koch was one of 13 children, and graduated in medicine at Gottingen. After serving in the Franco-Prussian War, he started research into bacteria. He was the first to show that diseases could be caused from cultured bacteria (anthrax, 1876). He used dyes to stain bacteria for examination, and developed culture techniques using agar gel. In 1882 he identified the tubercule bacillus, responsible for tuberculosis, leading to his 1905 Nobel Prize. He later studied bacterial diseases across the world, and developed the Koch Postulates for determining whether an organism is responsible for a disease.
