Alexander Mackenzie. Portrait of Sir Alexander Mackenzie (1755-1820), Scottish-Canadian explorer and the first European to cross the North American continent. Mackenzie's explorations were intended to discover an easy, overland route to the Pacific Ocean. In 1789 he charted the course of the Mackenzie River but found that it flowed into the Arctic rather than cutting through the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific. In 1793 he sailed up the Peace River, crossed the Rockies on foot before sailing down the Fraser River and completing the journey overland on 22 July 1793. In 1801 he published an account of his travels and was knighted a year later.
