The remains of Cornish Engine House at the Magpie Mine, near Sheldon, Derbyshire. Mining took place here from 1682 until 1958 hen the Magpie closed.

View of the main engine house at the Magpie Mine near Sheldon in the Derbyshire Peak District. Originally the building housed a Cornish Beam Engine for getting water out of the mine to stop it flooding. The engine house dates from 1868 but lead has been mined at this site since 1682 but a number of smaller workings were consolidated to form the Magpie Mine in 1740. The mine and surrounding area is a Scheduled Monument under the care of the Peak District Mines Historical Society. Visits are free and allowed at any time. The Magpie Mine closed a number of times, mostly for financial reasons and finally closed in 1958, the last working lead mine in Derbyshire.
