London, UK. LIBRARY. Salman Rushdie at his London home before he was condemned by the Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khomeini in 1989 and had to go into hiding. Khomeini and other Muslim leaders had condemned Rushdie for the publication of his novel The Satanic Verses with its supposed references to Muhammed. Rushdie remained in hiding for 10 years.
