A middle byzantine crystal icon with John the Baptist, 8th - 10th century Milky quartz crystal, the surface reground, one side furnished with a niche in which a frontal effigy of John the Baptist fashioned in bas-relief holds a cross in his left hand as the right hand indicates. The edges of the niche are worked as a canopy with a crenate base, laterally columns with spiral banding and a cupola with four leaves and a central "noble stone". Rare cameo work from this era.
