Red Ginger on Oahu island

Red Ginger (Zingiberaceae: Alpinia purpurata) in Waimea Valley on Oahu. This popular ornamental ginger from Asia grows in clumps to 3-4 m in height. The bark, seeds, fruit, and flowers have been used in the West Indies to treat stomach complaints. One study showed that A. purpurata contain important flavenoids and volatile oils. Because of its proven effect in vasodilation, it may be a possible remedy for treating hypertension. Alpinia galangal is a close relative to the red ginger and is well known for its use in Thai curries and soups ().
