It was two hundred andforty feet across, perhaps one hundred and sixty-five feet high, covered with marble andadorned with statues. When Rome was besieged by the Germans in 537 the inhabi-tants used the tomb for a fortress and threw down the statues on the heads of the bar-barians. When Gregory the Great prayed that Rome be delivered from a terriblepestilence he saw the archangel Michael sheathing his sword over Hadrians tomb; andsince then it has been called the Castle of the Holy
