Where there is no second stair-case in a country house, this plan of arranging the 272 VILLAS AND COTTAGES. principal flight in the main hall is attended with sev-eral disadvantages, as the servants have to be con-stantly traversing it backward and forward when at-tending to the upper rooms. In a house like this, onthe other hand, where there is a kitchen wing and aback staircase, a well-proportioned, handsome, open de-sign, with newel posts and solid turned balusters, maybe made to add much to the dignity of the hall, andto give a special character and individuality to thewhole house. The owner, when giving his instruc-tions in regard to the design now under considera-tion, laid much stress on this feature of the plan, andwas desirous that it should be both easy of ascent andliberal in its general appearance.
