A male great blue heron keeps an eye on nearby fishermen in case they drop bait on the Point Cadet fishing bridge, May 22, 2021, in Biloxi, Mississippi. The 4,700-foot pier opened in 2013. Great blue herons are the largest herons native to North America. They are found throughout most of North America, as far north as Alaska and the southern Canadian provinces in the summer. In winter, the range extends south through Florida, Mexico, and the Caribbean to South America. Great blue herons rarely venture far from bodies of water, but are occasionally seen flying over upland areas. (Photo by Carmen K. Sisson/Cloudybright)
