Schieffelin’s name is known in history books because he discovered silver in the Arizona Territory. Schieffelin’s discovery led to the founding of Tombstone, Arizona. The town too tough to die! Tombstone was founded on silver but Hollywood turned Tombstone’s history in to cinema gold! Tombstone's mining history, about US $85,000,000 in silver was produced from its mines. Some of the ore from Al and Ed Schieffelin and Richard Gird "Lucky Cuss", "Tough Nut", and the "Contention" mines assayed at around $15,000 to the ton. $15,000 in 1879 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $475, in 2024. On March 13, 1879, Al and Ed Schieffelin sold their two-thirds interest in the Tombstone Mining and Milling Company, which owned the Tough Nut mine, for US$1 million $1,000,000 in 1879 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $31,669, in 2024.
