The company has regularly in its service a surgeon,whose duty is to drive immediately upon call to any pointin the system where an accident may have occurred, andto render every assistance in his power to the injured per-son. This course is dictated not only by humanity,. INSPECTION AND REPAIR CAR but by wise economy, since it is almost always possible toobtain a truthful statement of the accident immediatelyafter its occurrence, while after several days delay garbledor deceptive accounts are not infrequent. As a matter offact, the companys disbursements for injury are small, inspite of the high speeds maintained by the cars, the regu-lar fund, amounting to 3 per cent of the gross earnings,which has been set aside for the past two or three years,proving so far sufficient to take care of all disbursementson this account.
