ROSES GROWN WITH CARNATIONS It is sometimes convenient to grow roseswith carnations, on the principle that anyroses are better than none. Such varietiesas Papa Gontier, Souvenir de Wootton,Perle des Jardins, Madame Cusin, Niphetos,Ivory, and Golden Gate (that is the coolerkinds), can be grown with carnations pro-viding the house is kept at 50 degreesat night. To grow these plants in such atemperature they require treatment a littledifferent from that usually followed in forcingroses. They should be planted not later thanJuly 1st, should be good stock from not lessthan three-inch pots, and grown liberallyon till September 1st. Then gradually reducethe amount of water at the roots so as toget them accustomed to a less amount ofhumidity in the house than is usually given. CUT FLOWERS UNDER GLASS 93 for roses. They will show a firm, solidwood by the time the carnations are this time on the roses must be keptrather dry, and when watered be given onlyenough to moisten the soil through. Watershould only be applied on bright days, and then early in the morning as soon asthe sun is on the plants. The soil aroundthe roots should be made as firm as possiblesoon after planting. About the middle ofFebruary or early in March the plants shouldhave a good mulching of manure. ByApril they will want a larger proportion ofwater, but care must be taken not to get toosoft a growth. This practice is followed onsome places and good roses are cut all throughthe winter. Liquid manure may be given as soon asthe plants are well rooted through the bench, but it must be given with care. It is well toexamine the roots from time to time to seethat all is progressing favourably. M
