Spallanzani's volcano research. Historical artwork of the Italian biologist Lazzaro Spallanzani (1729-1799), carrying out pioneering research on the volcano Mount Etna. Spallanzani studied volcanoes in Sicily and the neighbouring areas. He took systematic measurements that established that the same physical laws apply to the surface of the Earth and its interior, where volcanoes are created. He devised an experiment enabling him to measure the heat in a volcano, expressing it as a temperature.
