One of the bitternesses of life to thehardworking buyer is to have the advertis-ing man (who keeps track of all other storesas well as his own, and is a sort of generalinformation bureau) tell him, after he hasmade his price on a particularly promisingline of goods, that the rival establishmentdown the street has cut under him 10 percent. An inflexible rule in many houses isthat goods of a standard quality must besold at a price not higher than that of com-petitors, or be withdrawn from sale, and thelatter course is not the usual solution.
