The Wittenham Clumps are a strange pair of isolated wooded chalk hills in the Thames Valley. The higher of the two, Round Hill, is shown here. It is 390 feet (120 m) above sea-level. The grassy slopes of The Clumps lead up to summits wooded by the oldest beech tree plantings in England, dating back to the 1740s; they offer many fine panoramic views overlooking villages and towns of rural Oxfordshire.
