Knee joint with calcium deposits. Arthroscopic view of the joint of the human knee, showing calcium deposits. At centre, the joint surface is seen, with soft tissue at lower right. Calcium deposits are visible at top. An arthroscope (type of endoscope) is a rigid steel tube that is inserted through a small incision in the knee. It gives the surgeon access to remove or reshape any damaged tissue by remote manipulation. The arthro- scope has surgical instruments (forceps and scalpel attachments). It also contains optical fibres, a viewing lens and light source. This is known as minimally-invasive \keyhole\" surgery."
